George Miller Reaffirms He’s Planning a Return Trip to the Wasteland
We may get to ride again, shiny and chrome
George Miller, the visionary creator of the Mad Max franchise, offered reassurance to long-waiting fans in a recent interview with IndieWire. There have been rumblings of Miller’s intention to continue the series after the extraordinary fan and critical reception to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road (a particular favorite of The News Wheel staff). However, those details have been few and far between.
Now, Miller is back to share a bit more info, if maybe not as much as we’d like.
Max Drives Mad: He’d be safer in a Subaru
“There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story,” said Miller. “We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out this Warner thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen.”
The “Warner thing,” as he put it, is the protracted legal battle he and Warner Bros. have been entrenched in regarding bonus pay since the release of the Fury Road. Despite the lingering court case, Miller remains “cautiously optimistic.” And he has plenty of reason to be, given that Fury Road managed to escape almost 15 years of development hell to win six Oscars. Not unlike the War Boys, these films are no strangers to the idea of living, dying, and living again.
The future belongs to the Mad… and George Miller
While we can assume with reasonable certainty that Fury Road’s marquee stars will make a return appearance, what about the cars? Will Max’s V8 Interceptor — last seen being pancaked between Furiosa’s War Rig and The People Eater’s Limousine — pull a Lazarus? What about Miller’s bonkers kit-bashed monstrosities like Immortan Joe’s Gigahorse? Dare we hope for a rebuilt edition of the War Rig?
There are a ton of questions left to be answered about all three of Millers planned productions, but it’s comforting to know they’re very much still on his mind. Now, all we need is confirmation of the Doof Warrior’s presence in the film, and the Academy might as well start polishing that Oscar.
