General Motors Southeast Asia in July announced that Hector Villarreal has been appointed its new president. Previously the managing director of GM Russia, Villarreal is tasked with boosting business in the region, namely by the emphasizing popular products like the Chevrolet Colorado and Trailblazer and launching the new Captiva in Thailand later this year.

“Hector brings to Southeast Asia strong commercial acumen from his experiences leading GM businesses and functions in several international markets, including Mexico, Korea, Uzbekistan, and Russia,” said Andy Dunstan, President and Managing Director, GMIO Strategic Markets, Alliances & Distributors. “Hector has with a deep understanding of our business and a proven track record in building strong stakeholder relationships to maximize performance with our teams, distributors, and dealer partners.”
Villarreal’s career with General Motors began in 1990 when he assumed the role of manufacturing project engineer at the automaker’s Ramos Arizpe Plant in Mexico. He took his most recent role as managing director of GM Russia in 2017; prior to that, he spent two years as president and managing director of GM Operations Uzbekistan and three years as the vice president of Planning and Program Management for GM Korea.
Hector Villarreal takes on the role in relief of outgoing President of GM Southeast Asia Ian Nicholls, who has begun his retirement. Nicholls was appointed to the role in August 2017 and has been with General Motors for 27 years. In addition to his stint as the head person for GM Southeast Asia, Nicholls served in roles including vice president of Planning for South Africa and GM’s global segment director in charge of trucks and SUVs.
