Thanks to new technology developed by Hyundai, drivers and passengers could soon be able to enjoy fresher, healthier air inside their vehicles.

Hyundai’s Smart Air Purification system uses a laser-based sensor to continuously monitor cabin air quality, assessing it as either Poor, Fair, Good, or Excellent. This air quality level is shown on the car’s infotainment screen using a 16-bar digital display.

Whenever the air quality inside the vehicle dips to Fair, the system springs into action until the atmosphere has been restored to Excellent. It’s even capable of automatically closing the vehicle’s windows to speed up the process.

Smart Air Purification works in tandem with high-performance air filters capable of collecting 99 percent of fine particulates. It’s also equipped with a charcoal-based deodorizer. Laser technology keeps the sensor reliable, as it’s not vulnerable to being affected by fine particulate buildup over time.

“Enabling our customers to breathe the cleanest air, even in highly polluted areas, is a demonstration of how Hyundai Motor Group strives to care for its customers,” said YongSuk Shin, head of the FR Interior & Exterior System Engineering Design Team. “This innovation is just one of many projects we are working on to provide our customers with the best in-car environments.”

Smart Air Purification hasn’t been rolled out on any specific vehicle models yet, but it’s being considered for inclusion on upcoming Hyundai and Kia models.
