The Kona crossover was one of four Hyundai vehicles to receive an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating for 2019

For 2019, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety has awarded 10 Hyundai vehicles — an industry best — with Top Safety Pick+ and Top Safety Pick ratings. It’s the second year in a row that Hyundai has led the industry in IIHS safety honors.

“To repeat with the most number of awards in the industry is a great accomplishment,” said Andy Freels, president of Hyundai America Technical Center. “Our blend of advanced safety features and structural engineering truly offer something that our owners and new car shoppers can really appreciate.”

To be rated at Top Safety Pick+, vehicles need to earn “good” ratings in six safety tests (driver-side and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint), along with an “advanced” or “superior” rating for front crash prevention and a “good” rating for headlights. Four Hyundai vehicles received this rating when equipped with available front crash prevention and specific headlights:

To gain a Top Safety Pick rating, vehicles must get “good” safety test ratings in five categories (driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, roof strength, and head restraint), an “acceptable” or “good” rating in passenger-side small overlap front testing and headlights, and an “advanced” or “superior” rating in front crash prevention. Six Hyundai vehicles received this rating:

  • The Hyundai Santa Fe XL SUV
  • The Hyundai Tucson SUV
  • The Hyundai Ioniq hybrid car
  • The Hyundai Ioniq plug-in hybrid car
  •  The Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback
  • The Hyundai Accent subcompact sedan
