Matthew McConaughey is a man of many talents. He’s a fine actor, a secret professional wrestling fan, and a bongo enthusiast, among other things. At least one of those attributes is why he’s been Lincoln’s leading brand spokesman for the past several years. McConaughey returns once more to help promote the all-new 2019 Lincoln Nautilus, demonstrating another skill in the process: pool hustler.

How Does It Stack Up? Comparing the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus to the Cadillac XT5

Imagine having a dinner party at an Academy Award-winning actor’s house (we can probably guess it’s McConaughey’s house since it’s the same pad featured in so many of his other Lincoln ads). You walk inside as the night winds down and he just kind of stops and stares at a red-felted pool table in something like total awe. You wonder if he slipped away at some point to get lit up in a closet somewhere and you hadn’t noticed. Then he grabs a pool stick and just kicks in this ridiculous trick shot. And you’re like…whaaaat?

Why pool? Why any of this? Because the trick shot is being used as a parallel for the Nautilus’ Lane-Keeping System and Co-Pilot360 technologies, you see. The new suite of technologies, standard on the Nautilus, includes Blind Spot Detection with Cross-Traffic Alert, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision Warning with Dynamic Brake Support, and several more driver-assistive technologies.

More on the Nautilus: Lincoln’s new SUV is technologically advanced

“These are all amazing technologies, but not very easy to illustrate,” said Jon Pearce, chief creative officer at the Hudson Rouge ad agency. “We were looking for a metaphor that was upscale and luxury-appropriate. We thought about billiards and how, when you’re good at pool, you can make these shots that do amazing things — just like these technologies in the Lincoln Nautilus.”

“This is a great way to showcase these technologies — to bring them to life in a way that is distinctly Lincoln,” said Eric Peterson, Lincoln communications marketing manager. “Trick shots and technology are an unlikely combination, but here, it works.”

Lincoln extends the metaphor with “Control on Cue,” an extended ad for social media starring trick-shot artist Steve Markle. Poooool!
