Back in May 2018, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd and 4R Energy started the Blue Switch program, designed to use electric vehicles to help combat the impact of natural disasters with emergency power sourced from electric vehicles. Now, that program has earned the Best Resilience Award from the Association for Resilience Japan.

According to Nissan, “The program promotes the use of electric vehicles to address issues related to disaster prevention, energy management, climate change, tourism, and population declines. In the past two years, more than 8 million households in Japan have experienced power outages due to natural disasters.”

The number will go up, too. Nissan will secure a total of 31 agreements by the end of this month with companies and governments to implement its Blue Switch Program.

“The agreements make electric cars available for local communities and citizens to use as power sources at evacuation centers and welfare facilities in the event of outages caused by natural disasters,” reports the automaker.

The agreements extend to Nissan dealership test drives, local government-owned vehicles, and car-sharing services.

By leading the charge on repurposing used 40-kilowatt hour batteries that power the innovative and popular Nissan LEAF, 4R Energy is boosting resilience.
