Perhaps more so than any other year, 2019 has seen automakers from across the world and the industry taking action to prevent unnecessary deaths due to drivers leaving passengers locked in cars during extreme weather. Nissan, in particular, has taken it upon themselves to make sure that these easily-avoidable incidents are brought to an absolute minimum.

In a recent press release, Nissan News Canada announced Rear Door Alert (RDA): a safety technology specially designed to remind drivers to check their back seats before leaving their vehicle.

Your Nissan keeps you safe: Return the favor

The system is simple yet innovative. Your Nissan will monitor when a rear door is opened and closed both before and after your car is in motion. If a door was opened before you started to drive but not opened after you shifted into park, the vehicle will notify you. The alert will start with a text-based message on the instrument panel. If you leave your vehicle without opening the rear door, your horn will begin to sound.

On the more frivolous end of the spectrum, RDA can save you the hassle of cleaning exploded soda off of your upholstery in the winter or melted ice cream in the summer. More seriously, though, it could save the lives of countless children and pets.

Protect your loved ones: Drive a Rogue

RDA is currently standard on all Nissan Altimas, Armadas, LEAFs, Muranos, Maximas, Pathfinders, Rogues, Qashqais and TITAN crew cabs produced since the 2019 model year. Nissan plans to make the feature available on every four-door truck, sedan, and SUV by 2022.
