[PHOTOS] 2020 GMC Sierra HD Boasts New Look, New Trailering Tech

The all-new 2020 GMC Sierra HD

Hot on the heels of the redesigned 2019 GMC Sierra 1500, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD arrives with more towing muscle, a suite of cutting-edge trailering technologies, and a redesigned exterior that emphasizes confidence and strength.

“The all-new 2020 Sierra HD is the most capable heavy-duty truck that we’ve ever offered,” said Duncan Allred, Global GMC’s vice president. “For customers who demand a premium, innovative heavy-duty truck that supports their passions, the next-generation Sierra HD can pull like a pro.”

A few of the biggest changes and new features for this model include longer and taller dimensions, a bigger grille, a lowered bed to make loading easier, side steps for the cargo bed, the six-function MultiPro tailgate, extra features for the ProGrade Trailering System, and a new off-road AT4 trim.

Powertrains

The 2020 Sierra HD will carry a 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine that makes 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. It will be paired with a new 10-speed Allison automatic transmission, and this combination is expected to give the Sierra HD even more powerful towing capabilities. A gas engine option is also in the works, but details haven’t been announced yet.

Trailering features

The Sierra HD’s new trailering features are designed to make towing easier and safer. The ProGrade Trailering System features 15 unique camera views, including an angle that effectively allows the driver to “see through” the trailer. This system includes an in-cabin Trailering App that monitors lights, trailer tire pressure, and more. The new iN Command control system gives drivers the ability to manage and monitor trailer functions and conditions through the myGMC smartphone app. The new Sierra HD also comes with new trailering mirrors, a new Park Grade Hold Assist feature to aid hill braking, Trailer Sway Control technology, and an integrated trailer brake controller.

Exterior design

With its taller, longer proportions and bold grille, the new Sierra HD boasts an imposing silhouette and a driving position that gives the driver a better view of the road. Other notable exterior features include new LED lamps and signature lighting, class-leading cargo-bed volume, and a box with 12 tie-downs and an available 120-volt outlet.

GMC says the 2020 Sierra HD will be available late this summer. It will be available in 2500HD and 3500HD models with single or dual rear-wheel configurations.
