The vast majority of pickup buyers these days are opting for crew-cab and double-cab configurations, so automakers have been cutting back on producing traditional two-door regular-cab trucks.

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers the latest illustration of this trend. Although the model debuted at dealerships in late summer, Chevy still hasn’t produced any regular-cab versions. Fortunately for buyers who want the option, that’s about to change.

Sometime during the first quarter of 2019, regular-cab Silverados will start rolling into Chevy dealerships. One catch: regular-cab models will only be available with a long bed, and not with a standard bed. Regular cabs are also likely to be included only on lower trims such as the Work Truck, Custom, and LT.

Chevy hasn’t released pricing details for this configuration yet, but for the 2018 Silverado, regular cabs cost about $4,000 less than double cabs.

According to Chevy, only about 12 percent of Silverado buyers opt for the regular-cab configuration. Around 70 percent opt for crew cabs, while 18 percent prefer double cabs.

Faced with these preferences, Chevy pushed production for regular-cab models to the back of the line, prioritizing more popular configurations instead. Now that the demand for larger cabs has been slaked, Chevy can pivot to making less-in-demand models.

Although regular cabs aren’t particularly popular, Chevy isn’t likely to discontinue them altogether. With 800,000 Silverados sold in 2018, 12 percent of that total is close to 100,000 vehicles — still a sizable number.
