Revisiting Fast Food Drive-Thru Etiquette in Time for the Holidays

Holidays bring long lines and more traffic, not just when you’re at the mall but also in fast food drive-thru lanes. Here are some tips for helping you keep your cool and navigate this situation smoothly, so you can be on your merry way as fast as possible — whether you’re headed to another shopping destination or a neighbor’s dinner party that you (somehow) promised you’d attend.

Be Prepared: Items to bring when trading in your vehicle

Leave space between cars

Make sure to leave sufficient space between the car in front of you, to avoid potential collisions. And be patient — everyone else in the drive-thru is likely just as hungry or thirsty as you are, with their own busy itinerary of places to get to before heading home.

Gather each passenger’s order beforehand

Show courtesy to other drivers in line, and to the cashier taking your order, by getting everyone’s orders before you pull up to the speaker. A little preparation can go a long way in shaving some minutes off of your time waiting in line, and help other driver’s get their orders faster.

Use quantities when you order

Make sure to specify what size and number of items you need when you’re placing your order. This will help minimize any mistakes with your order, so you won’t hold up the line waiting on a large drink when you accidentally ordered a small one.

Don’t add items to your order at the window

Spare yourself from the wrath of the cashier by placing your order just once, at the drive-thru speaker. Avoid adding extra items when you get to the drive-thru window, as a courtesy to the fast-food workers. This will help you (and the drivers behind you) get back on the road more quickly.

Spread some generosity

It’s common for drive-thru windows to have a tip jar. Why not spread some holiday cheer to the fast-food staff by contributing to the jar? It’s a simple way to help spread the kindness of the season. Another great idea is to pay for the person in the drive-thru line behind you.
