A long-anticipated Toyota-BMW partnership could finally be on the horizon, according to a report from AutoWeek. The collaboration promised to produce a nifty sports car upon which we could feast our greedy eyes, but the latest reports go further than that to suggest that the sports car in question could be a hybrid version of BMW’s Z4 roadster.

The car will be developed using BMW-built engines to Toyota specifications. We can expect the sporty number to come with all-wheel-drive, and be constructed from a mixture of aluminum, carbon fiber, and high-strength steel. Toyota and BMW will each offer their own version of the car which will share the same platform, but have separate branding. This means that we can expect much more separation  between the two brands for this car, as opposed to Toyota’s other partnership with Subaru which produced the twin sports coupes, the Toyota 86 (Scion FR-S) and Subaru BRZ.

This sports car will likely take elements from the BMW Z4, as well as Toyota’s FT-1 concept. Once developed, don’t expect Toyota and BMW to wash their hands of each other. Each automaker has hinted that this collaboration will only be the beginning of what we hope will be a long, fruitful friendship.
