Both the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are great picks if you’re looking for an upscale midsize truck — and for the 2021 model year, they’re about to get even better. Here’s a look at what’s coming to these two trucks.

A new look

Both models are set to receive revised front fascias and new grilles. On the Canyon, spy shots have revealed that the new front end features a grille that unifies its split upper and lower grilles. With its new grille, it may also boast enhanced cooling capabilities. It’s also possible that we’ll see updates to the interior, but those will probably be fairly minor.

Why the changes? Well, the Canyon and Colorado are facing some pretty tough competition from the Ford Ranger and the Jeep Gladiator. Updates — even minor updates — help these GM vehicles stay ahead of the pack.

Future plans

Despite these changes, GM isn’t considering the updates to constitute a facelift or mid-cycle refresh. Originally, GM planned to give the mid-size duo a full refresh for the 2021 model year, and then do a complete overhaul for the next-generation models. However, it’s looking like those overhauls will take place on the 2023 or 2024 model year trucks. By then, they’ll boast the 31XX-2 platform, which is an updated version of their current 31XX platform.

About the Colorado and Canyon

As they stand, both the Colorado and Canyon are beyond worthy contenders in the current market. The 2019 Colorado boasts the GM-exclusive Duramax® 2.8L Turbo-Diesel engine, which delivers 7,700 pounds of maximum towing capacity and an impressive EPA-estimated 30 MPG highway.

Choose the 2019 Canyon for its CornerStep rear bumper that makes it easy to access the truck bed, and its connectivity features, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a wireless charging station.
