Creative crafting

Known as the Plane Car, this eye-catching Sierra is fully committed to the aviation theme. To achieve the Plane Car’s signature look, designer Mark Ray merged the truck with a 1974 Cessna Ram aircraft. Ray found the plane components at a boneyard, which is the airplane equivalent of a salvage yard. But it wasn’t just any scrapped plane — it was used as a prop in Marvel’s 2018 smash hit, Black Panther.

But the aviation aesthetic is more than skin deep. Inside, it’s got hardwood floors, captain’s chairs, and even airplane-inspired windows. Mercifully, the front propeller isn’t functional — although it does spin when the vehicle is in motion. See it for yourself — here’s the Plane Car in action.

Hard work pays off

Working eight to 10 hours per day, it took Ray six months to build this amazing vehicle. During the process, he removed the cab, all four doors, the roof, and windows, and mounted parts of the plane in their place. Fortunately, the procedure was already a bit familiar to Ray — he’d previously built a boat car and a plane car based on a sedan.

The previous plane car wasn’t nearly as large — the Sierra-based model is 32 feet long and 12 feet tall to the top of the tail. Better yet, it’s fully street legal, and complete with functional lights, doors, a backup camera, mirrors, and seatbelts.

While the Plane Car is a passion project, it can help bring in some income by acting as a mobile billboard. That seems like a good gig — the Plane Car turns way more heads than a billboard or a bench.

Whether its advertising space is rented or not, Ray is proud of his creation. After all, one look at the Plane Car can make people smile, laugh, and marvel. Who wouldn’t be proud of putting a little more happiness on the road?
