2017 Subaru Impreza Overview

The last time the Subaru Impreza had been updated was back in 2012, but all of that changes with the new 2017 model. The 2017 Impreza is the first vehicle to use Subaru’s new global platform. This architecture is reportedly much stiffer than what was used in last year’s model, which should help to improve both handling and passenger safety in the event of a crash. The 2017 Subaru Impreza is still available in sedan and hatchback body styles, comes standard with the company’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system, and carries a relatively affordable starting MSRP of $18,395. The new Impreza competes for sales with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda3.

2017 Subaru Impreza Performance

The 2017 Subaru Impreza comes standard with a 2.0-liter boxer engine that provides 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. That rating of 152 ponies is actually an increase of four horsepower over what was offered in last year’s Impreza. This four-cylinder motor is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox in the entry-level model, but higher trims of the Impreza come equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In addition, the Impreza Sport features a revised suspension and Active Torque Vectoring technology, which should improve the vehicle’s acceleration.

The Impreza’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine now features direct-injection technology that makes this vehicle one of the most fuel efficient all-wheel drive cars that money can buy. The 2017 Impreza sedan equipped with the continuously variable transmission can yield an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. The hatchback model yields slightly lower highway fuel economy of 37 mpg. Moreover, every new Impreza features a 13.2 gallon fuel tank.

The interior of the Impreza is roomier than it’s ever been thanks to Subaru’s new global platform, which allowed the wheelbase to grow by an inch. The interior is also more visually appealing than last year’s model, as its dashboard has a bolder design and the materials used in the cabin also have a softer feel. The 2017 Impreza comes standard with a manually-adjustable air conditioning system, cloth upholstery, and 6.5-inch display system that’s compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, buyers who go with the range-topping Limited model will get a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, and automatic climate control. Other optional equipment available with the new Impreza includes a power moonroof and navigation system with access to TomTom maps.

2017 Subaru Impreza Safety

Subaru claims the Impreza’s body can absorb the energy of a crash 40% better than the old model. In addition, the Impreza comes standard with active safety tech such as high-beam assist, which can turn of the vehicle’s high beams when sensors detect the presence of another vehicle. The Impreza’s rearview camera also gets guidelines for the new model year to help with reversing. Speaking of which, the Impreza can apply the brakes automatically when another car is detected while the Impreza is backing up. Optional for the ’17 Impreza is Subaru’s EyeSight System. This one-of-a-kind package comes with advanced safety equipment like rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure alert, just to name of its premium safety features.
