3 Roadside Diners to Visit in South Carolina

The South is known for its food. Whether you want fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, or some ice cold sweet tea, there’s no shortage of delicious fare in this region. South Carolina is home to some good old fashioned diners that are serving up the hottest and tastiest treats. Check out these roadside diners the next time you drive through the area.

1. The Early Bird Diner

At The Early Bird Diner in Charleston, you can get breakfast all day. This includes sautéed shrimp and grits, corn cake benedict, steak and eggs, buttermilk pancakes, and even what they call “The Early Burger,” which has bacon, cheddar, and an egg atop a beef patty between two pieces of Texas toast. But if you’re looking for something heftier, the lunch and dinner menus might have what you need. You can get a classic burger or sandwich for lunch, or try the Pot Likker Noodle Bowl: fresh ramen noodles, pulled pork, and veggies in a collard green and spicy ham broth. Not your style? There’s also meatloaf, a fried pork chop, steak and shrimp, and — of course — fried chicken.


2. The Glass Onion

While this establishment opened up just 11 years ago, The Glass Onion has serving up Southern diner classics daily. Alabama native Chris Stewart opened up the diner with his wife Suzanne after acquiring a plethora of cooking knowledge in places like St. John, Virgin Islands. While breakfast is not served at The Glass Onion, you can get brunch every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On that brunch menu, you’ll find items like a fried chicken Po Boy, a pimento cheese omelet, shrimp and grits, and cornmeal fried Carolina classic catfish. The lunch and dinner menus have some of the same items on the brunch menu, but vary based on what fresh ingredients are available.

3. Flopeye Diner

You have to go a little off the beaten path to get to Flopeye Diner in Great Falls. But when you do arrive to this quaint, small spot, you’ll be greeted with the kindest staff and scintillating aromas floating from the kitchen. Flopeye has been called a true Mom and Pop diner, serving some of the best breakfast in the South. While it’s definitely a “no frills” place (don’t expect fabric napkins or the ability to make a reservation), the food more than makes up for that. One of the top menu items is the hot skillet with grilled seafood over jambalaya rice. Other tasty options include Teriyaki grilled chicken with Greek style potatoes, collard greens, mac and cheese, and sweet corn bread.
