VW’s next-generation EV concept

It’s been an exciting couple of months for both production-ready and concept electric vehicles, and the industry shows no sign of slowing down. Adding to the bevy of announcements, Volkswagen debuted its brand-new all-electric concept car, the ID. SPACE VIZZION, at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
Volkswagen always looks to the future: The VW Atlas
The appropriately futuristic-looking SPACE VIZZION boasts several features that set it apart in the increasingly crowded next-gen EV market. To begin with, it is constructed using Volkswagen’s exclusive Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB). This platform keeps all of the drivetrain components extremely compact and moves the battery into the car’s floor. With the space this move saves, VW’s engineers were able to drastically change the SPACE VIZZION’s architecture.
The changes VW made to traditional vehicle construction allowed them to reduce the SPACE VIZZION’s coefficient of drag to an incredibly low 0.24. Between this advancement and its 82 kWh battery, the vehicle can achieve an estimated range of 300 miles on one charge.
The innovations continue on the inside of the ID. SPACE VIZZION. Rather than using the design that we’ve all come to expect from a dashboard, all of your vital driving information is primarily displayed through an augmented reality heads-up display (AR HUD). The traditional dash is now a secondary 15.6-inch touchscreen that displays entertainment, comfort, and navigation information.

In addition to completely reinventing the cockpit, Volkswagen is looking to make a statement with the materials used in the vehicle’s construction. Chrome-like paint replaces true chrome appointments, and the seats and center console are outfitted with an innovative, sustainable new material called AppleSkin™. AppleSkin™ is just as soft as leather and replaces 20 percent of the polyurethane used in material production with leftovers from the process of juicing apples.
Between its edgy name, ultra-modern look, high-efficiency construction, and unusual interior materials, the ID. SPACE VIZZION isn’t quite like any other EV out there. While it is still very much in the concept phase, Volkswagen stated in a press release that the vehicle “previews a potential production car for Europe and North America.”
