The second-generation XC60 has been in production since 2017, making it one of the older models in its segment. While Volvo recently introduced a light facelift, new information suggests that a broader revision is already in the works.

According to Automotive News, the planned changes focus on the XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid variant. The update is expected to combine styling revisions with a larger battery pack, targeting a substantial improvement in electric driving capability.

A Larger Battery for the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid

According to people familiar with the plan, Volvo intends to increase the battery size of the XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid. The goal is to more than double, and potentially triple, the model’s current electric-only range.

The current XC60 plug-in hybrid offers 35 miles of electric-only range and uses an 18.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. If the reported plans materialize, the revised model could approach 100 miles of range on battery power alone.

Motor1 notes that such an increase would place the XC60 ahead of the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e, which is rated for 54 miles of electric range.

Existing Powertrain Remains Highly Capable

It remains unclear whether Volvo plans to modify other powertrain configurations. No additional details about mechanical changes have been reported beyond the larger battery.

The current XC60 combines a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. Together, the system produces 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque.

Performance remains a strong point of the existing model. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Design Revisions and Expected Launch Timing

The update is not limited to the powertrain. Volvo is also preparing styling changes for the XC60. The revised design is expected to feature new headlights and a redesigned grille. The vehicle is reportedly scheduled to debut early next year.

Pricing details have not been announced. The current 2026 XC60 plug-in hybrid starts at $62,545, and the combination of a larger battery and updated design could affect the vehicle’s entry price.

The XC60 remains Volvo’s best-selling model, and the upcoming revision would represent the most significant update for the crossover since the recent 2026 refresh.
