BMW i3 Demand Forces Early Order Launch as Interest Surpasses Expectations

BMW is accelerating the launch of its new i3 by opening order books earlier than planned, following stronger-than-expected customer interest. The automaker says demand for the electric sedan has already surpassed expectations set by previous models. Orders for the “1st Edition” version opened on June 18.

The decision marks a shift in timing for one of BMW’s most closely watched upcoming electric vehicles. While production plans remain unchanged, the demand signal appears to have reshaped the commercial rollout.

It also places the i3 at the center of BMW’s broader EV strategy, as the company gauges how far customer appetite can stretch into the traditional sedan segment.

Demand Strong Enough To Shift The Schedule

BMW has moved faster than originally planned to open orders for the i3, now set for June 18 instead of a later launch expected in the fall. According to Automobilwoche, which cites company sources, the decision followed what the automaker described as strong customer interest after the car’s debut in Munich in March.

The initial rollout will focus on a special “1st Edition” version of the vehicle. While BMW has not officially confirmed the change in schedule, the report indicates the early demand was strong enough to justify accelerating the order timeline, even if production timing remains fixed.

It is one of those rare cases where the commercial response seems to have pulled the calendar forward, without altering the industrial plan behind it.

Interest Already Compared To Bmw’s iX3 Benchmark

BMW executives have reportedly framed early interest in the i3 as exceeding expectations set by the iX3, another key model in the brand’s electric lineup. Sales chief Jochen Goller is said to have noted that demand for the sedan surpassed the positive reception of the upcoming electric SUV.

That benchmark is not insignificant. The iX3 is described as having reached around 50,000 orders within months of its unveiling, along with more than 10,000 sales in Europe in just two months, according to figures cited by Carscoops.

Against that backdrop, the i3’s reception is being treated internally as a particularly strong signal of market interest, especially given the competitive pressure in the electric segment.

Global Attention And Production Timeline Remain Steady

The interest in the i3 is not limited to one region. The i3 has also attracted positive feedback from Europe and China, with its appearance at the Beijing Auto Show helping boost its visibility in a key EV market.

BMW has also positioned the model as part of a broader ambition to reinvigorate the midsize sedan category. The version showcased so far, the i3 50 xDrive, delivers 469 horsepower (350 kW) through a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup and is claimed to reach up to 900 kilometers (559 miles) of range under the applicable test cycle.

Despite the faster-than-expected order opening, production plans remain unchanged. Series production of the i3 is scheduled to begin in August at BMW’s Munich plant. The timeline stays intact, even as demand appears to be pulling ahead of expectations.
