The model marks a significant launch for BYD, which opened reservations for the Great Tang during the Beijing Auto Show in April. Early demand was unusually strong, with tens of thousands of customers placing reservations despite limited information beyond the vehicle’s appearance and technical specifications.
The Great Tang set a new reservation record for a BYD model, highlighting the level of interest generated ahead of pricing confirmation. The vehicle is built on the company’s latest electric vehicle technology platform and combines long driving range, high performance, and a feature-rich interior.
A Record-Breaking Launch Driven by Early Demand
When reservations opened in April, prospective buyers had access primarily to the SUV’s design and specification sheet. 30,000 reservations were recorded within the first 24 hours.
Two weeks later, the total exceeded 100,000 reservations, with many customers committing before official pricing was announced. By the time BYD formally launched the Great Tang on June 17, pre-orders had reached more than 150,000 units, establishing the highest reservation figure achieved by any BYD model.
The company announced a starting price of $35,500, below earlier estimates of roughly $36,700. The highest-priced version was introduced at $45,900, also coming in below previous expectations.

Long Range, High Output and Rapid Charging
The Great Tang is based on BYD’s Super e platform and uses a 1,000-volt electrical architecture alongside the company’s second-generation Blade battery technology.
The entry-level version is equipped with a 105.8 kWh battery pack and offers up to 497 miles of range under the CLTC testing cycle. The range-topping Flagship model receives a 130.15 kWh battery, increasing the CLTC range to as much as 590 miles.
Power output varies from 496 horsepower in the rear-wheel-drive configuration to a combined 784 horsepower in the dual-motor version. The latter can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
Charging capability is another headline specification. BYD states that Flash Charging can raise the battery level from 10% to 70% in five minutes, while a full charge requires nine minutes.

Premium Interior and International Rollout Plans
Inside, the Great Tang features three dashboard displays and a ceiling-mounted entertainment screen for rear passengers. The SUV also includes zero-gravity captain’s chairs, massage seats, and an integrated cooler.
The vehicle is configured with a 2+2+3 seating layout, making it, according to the source, China’s only seven-seat model with that arrangement. The Great Tang is larger than the Hyundai Ioniq 9.
Customer deliveries in China are scheduled to begin later this year. In an interview cited by Bloomberg, BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said that Europe and Asia-Pacific markets are expected to receive the Great Tang by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
Pricing in Europe is expected to be higher, partly because battery-electric BYD vehicles are subject to a combined 27% import duty in the European Union. For the United States, no launch plans have been announced. American buyers currently have no prospect of purchasing the Great Tang in their domestic market.
