An Encore for the Buick Encore: Two Models Debut at Shanghai
Buick is huge in China — and so is the new Encore GX. The updated, Chinese-market version of the Buick Encore come in two sizes: the subcompact crossover, simply entitled the Encore, and a model with a longer wheelbase, known as the Encore GX. Here’s a look at what we know so far.

Exterior styling
Although Buick says the new Encore is inspired by the Enspire concept SUV, not much of its styling seems to have transferred over. Its front headlights, fascia, and grille are notably different from the Enspire’s features — but that’s not a knock against the new Encore. This updated Encore looks much sportier than its predecessor, thanks to its new streamlined silhouette, the chrome strip on its grille, sloping roof, and redesigned rear fenders.
Powertrains and performance
Both the Encore and the Encore GX are equipped with eighth-generation Ecotec engines, paired to either the new nine-speed Hydra-Matic transmission or a new continuously variable transmission. Although no numbers have been released, Buick claims that this remarkably efficient powertrain boasts better fuel economy and lower emissions compared to its predecessor.
Even if the Encore and the Enspire don’t look that much alike, they might boast some internal similarities. The Enspire concept boasted wireless charging capabilities and 5G high-speed internet. However, given the fuel efficiency claims, it’s unlikely that we’ll get to experience the Enspire’s 550 horsepower engine and 0-60 time of 4 seconds.
Growing popularity in a growing market
Since the Encore debuted in China back in 2012, it’s been a favorite of younger customers. With the introduction of the Encore GX, buyers can get exactly the amount of space they need. It also fills a niche in Buick’s Chinese lineup — now, Buick enjoys a strong presence across the small, compact, midsize, and large SUV segments.
