First introduced roughly 25 years ago, the original A2 surprised many with its unusual silhouette, combining a tall windshield, short overhangs, and a sloping roofline. Audi now appears ready to revisit that concept, this time aligning it with its broader electrification strategy.

The upcoming A2 E-Tron will sit below the Q4 E-Tron in Audi’s lineup, marking a strategic entry point into the brand’s electric range. Audi confirmed the model’s return in March, though details remain limited beyond an initial teaser image.

A Familiar Name Rooted in Audi’s Lineup History

Audi has officially retained the A2 nameplate, adding the E-Tron suffix to reflect its electric nature. According to Motor1, the naming follows a long-standing structure within the brand, which began with the A8 in 1994 and expanded rapidly across the lineup.

At the time of the original A2’s launch, the A3 was Audi’s smallest model, while the A4 already occupied the next segment. The A2 designation naturally filled the gap for a compact city-focused vehicle, even if its proportions differed significantly from the rest of the range.

The new A2 E-Tron continues that logic, reintroducing a smaller offering designed for urban use while aligning with Audi’s current electrification naming conventions.

A Design That Echoes the past with Modern Cues

Audi has released only a single teaser image so far, yet it reveals several key design elements. The new A2 retains a silhouette similar to the original, including a sloping roofline, compact dimensions, and short overhangs. The shape appears slightly more rounded, giving it a more contemporary presence.

Visible details include thin daytime running lights and a subtle rear spoiler. The wheels also appear to reference earlier Audi concepts, notably the AL2 from 1997 as well as previous A2 TDI models.

The overall design suggests a blend between the original model’s minivan-like proportions and more recent crossover-inspired styling cues, without abandoning its distinctive identity.

Platform, Powertrain, and Launch Timeline

Audi has not disclosed full technical specifications, though the A2 E-Tron is expected to use Volkswagen Group’s MEB or MEB+ platform. This architecture underpins several compact electric models and supports multiple battery sizes and drivetrain configurations.

The vehicle is likely to feature a rear-wheel-drive setup as standard, with an all-wheel-drive option available. Powertrain options could include both single- and dual-motor configurations, with output ranging from around 200 horsepower for entry-level versions up to 326 horsepower in higher-performance variants, mirroring figures seen in the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX Performance.

Battery options are also expected to vary. The current ID.3 lineup includes packs of 58.0 kWh and 77.0 or 79.0 kWh, which could be shared with the A2 E-Tron.

Audi has indicated that the model will debut in the fall as part of three major launches this year, alongside the Q7 and Q9. Production will take place in Ingolstadt, Germany, with a European market launch possible before the end of 2026.

The company has not confirmed whether the A2 E-Tron will be sold in the United States. Such a move appears unlikely, particularly given that Volkswagen does not currently offer the ID.3 in that market and amid recent tariffs affecting imported vehicles.

Pricing has not been officially announced. Still, as the entry-level EV in Audi’s range, the A2 E-Tron is expected to start in the low $40,000 range, positioning it below the Q4 E-Tron, which begins just above $50,000 in the United States.
