Details have been sparse as-yet regarding the Buick Encore GX and its impending arrival in the United States, but crossover lovers in China have no such problem. In fact, they’re able to drive the new Buick Encore GX and the all-new Encore right now — both launched earlier this month as part of Buick’s push to launch eight new or refreshed vehicles by year’s end and at least a dozen more new vehicles between 2020-2023.

“Buick has been at the forefront of delivering innovative models with electrification, connectivity, intelligence, and sharing to match consumer preferences in China,” said Molly Peck, executive director of Buick for SAIC-GM. “The arrival of the all-new Encore and Encore GX … will give Buick a strong presence across small, compact, midsize, and large SUVs in its largest market — strengthening the brand’s overall competitiveness in one of the most competitive segments.”

The Chinese-spec 2020 Buick Encore GX is offered in four variants and carries a price ranging from approximately US$22,660 to US$27,025. In terms of size difference, the Encore GX is 6.2 inches longer, 5.9 inches wider, 1.5 inches taller, and has a 2.8-inch larger wheelbase than the Encore. The version on sale overseas is catered specifically for the China New Car Assessment Program and Chinese emission standards, but the U.S.-imported version will likely not change much if at all in terms of shape and styling.

Buick has confirmed that the U.S.-spec Encore GX will offer roughly 5 cubic feet more storage space than the Encore and 3 cubic feet less than the Envision, making it an ideal middle ground for drivers torn between the two.

The Encore GX will slot between the Encore and Envision, giving Buick a four-SUV lineup that it expects will help bolster sales in the United States over the next few years. Nearly 90 percent of all current Buick sales in the Unite States come from utility vehicles.

The Buick Encore GX is expected to arrive at dealerships in early 2020.
