Cadillac’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system was recently honored as Autoblog’s 2019 Technology of the Year at the Detroit auto show.
“Our editors found (Super Cruise) easy to use and noted the system simply works as intended,” says Autoblog.
Super Cruise beat a pair of competitors to win the website’s annual award: Infiniti’s VC Turbo technology and Mercedes’ EQ Boost 48-volt system.
Super Cruise uses SAE Level 2 technology to enable hands-free highway driving, easing driver fatigue during long journeys. With over 130,000 miles of highways mapped into its system, Super Cruise can be easily used throughout the U.S.
Setting New Standards: Cadillac’s semi-autonomous Super Cruise technology
So far, Super Cruise is only available on the Cadillac CT6
Autoblog notes that Super Cruise easily keeps the vehicle centered in its lane and maintains a safe distance from cars ahead of you. Cadillac’s semi-autonomous technology is also equipped with strong safety requirements to minimize distracted driving. A steering column-mounted camera tracks your gaze to make sure you’re looking at the road. If you aren’t, the system switches off and makes you take control of the car again.
Despite its sophistication, Super Cruise is fairly intuitive, with instrument cluster indicators and a steering wheel light to guide users.
Autoblog applauds Cadillac for its “responsible approach” to marketing Super Cruise. Instead of advertising it as self-driving technology, Cadillac “under-promised and over-delivered” the technology so drivers wouldn’t be lulled into complacency or tempted to misuse it.
So far, Super Cruise is only available on the CT6 performance sedan. However, Cadillac is expected to expand the technology to the rest of its lineup starting in 2020.
