Ford Analyzes Early Mustang Popularity, Trends in Europe
This year, Ford launched the Mustang in Europe for this first time ever. As can be expected, people were positively elated, so much so that 500,000 potential customers configured their dream pony car within the first month of release. This enabled Ford to take something of a survey of what buyers in its new market really want.
As it turns out, about half of all Mustangs configured throughout Europe were imagined with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. Given that the EcoBoost and the V8 are the only two engine options available in Europe, this fact may not sound all that surprising. That is, until you consider that the EcoBoost is the engine of choice in three of Ford’s five biggest European markets—France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK. Mustang EcoBoost comprised 61% of all vehicles configured in Italy, 59% of all Mustangs in Spain, and 55% of all configurations in France.
It was also shown that in those markets, customers prefer either Black or Race Red. Black proved to be the color of choice in Germany, Italy, and Spain, and Red was the preferred color in France and the UK. The Ebony leather interior was also chosen in 61% of all configurations, and 28% added the Custom Pack.
“The rush to configure Mustang online represents 50 years of pent up demand across Europe,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “For some people across Europe, all‑new Mustang is the car they have waited for their whole lives.”
