Ford Fusion Production to Continue Through 2021
Since Ford brought down a great axe upon the neck of every sedan in its lineup, it’s been understood that the Fusion is operating on borrowed time. Though the V6-powered Fusion Sport trim is confirmed to be finished after 2019, Ford says Fusion production will continue on at least through 2021.
Confirming a report that originated with CarsDirect, a Ford spokesman told Automotive News last week that the company will simply cut down on the available Fusion trims as it phases the sedan out of its lineup to make way for new products.

“Our goal in the final production year is to further simplify the offering and focus on maximizing the more popular SE, SEL, and Titanium models,” the spokesman said. Ford’s plan to keep the Fusion around for a few more model years means that it will likely be the last Ford sedan offered for some time. The subcompact Fiesta will leave the lineup after the 2019 model year, joining the discontinued Focus and Taurus.
Ford’s decision to rid its lineup of all sedans was announced in April 2018. It has since made clear that it intends to introduce new nameplates with unique silhouettes in their place, giving the brand one of the freshest lineups in the industry. Ford expects to have 23 nameplates in its lineup by 2023, which is three more than were being offered when the now discontinued sedans were in the offing.
Ford is said to be working on an “affordable” vehicle that will act as the entry-level option for new-car shoppers. This vehicle is expected to arrive by 2022. Ford is also rumored to be considering keeping the Fusion nameplate in the lineup as a sport wagon after the elimination of the sedan.
