If you want the off-road abilities of a 4×4 truck but the on-road simplicity of a 4×2, Ford’s got a proposition for you. Coming later this year, the all-new Ford Ranger midsize pickup gets a new Ranger FX2 Package, giving drivers even more in the way of personalization.

“FX2 expands Ranger’s options for customers who want tough, off-road style with the functionality of a locking differential but don’t need four-wheel drive,” said Brian Bell, Ford Ranger marketing manager. “This is another way our customers can personalize Ranger to match their lifestyle while getting a great value.”

The new Ranger FX2 Package adds 17-inch off-road tires (or 18-inch tires with available upgrade), a front underbody guard and air dam-delete, electronic-locking rear differential, and off-road tuning for the suspension. On the inside, you’ll be able to monitor pitch, roll, and yaw on the information cluster, making the Ranger the ideal candidate for an urban-dwelling weekend warrior.

Ford offers the new package in response to high demand for its Sport Appearance, Chrome Appearance, Black Appearance, and STX Appearance Packages, which are selected by one in three Ranger buyers. Ford also notes that around one third of all Ranger buyers are opting for the FX4 Off-Road Package and over half are selecting the Trailer Tow Package. Translation: More packages = more options for customers and more bucks for Ford.

“What’s most important for our customers is that any personalization offering starts with Built Ford Tough DNA,” said Chad Callander, Ford Ranger consumer marketing manager. “You know Ranger is going to live up to Ford’s proven truck standards, however you customize it.”

Adding the FX2 Package sets customers back a scant $595 (not including taxes); the package can be ordered now through Ford dealers and is expected to arrive toward the end of the year.
