Trucks are some of the most versatile vehicles on the road today, but all that power tends to come with a high price tag. Nissan wants to show the world that it’s possible to have a customized truck without breaking the bank, so it created its latest one-off vehicle: The Destination Frontier.

To compete with other well-known truck brands, Nissan has been rolling out concept trucks to demonstrate the capability of its lineup, many of them built on the Nissan TITAN or TITAN XD trucks. These include the Ultimate Service TITAN it donated to the American Red Cross and last summer’s Smokin’ TITAN, which inspired a cooking competition. They are easily out of budget range for the average driver to build themselves, but Nissan reports that re-creating the Destination Frontier should top out around $40,000 with the same components it used. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but it’s downright reasonable in the world of custom trucks.
“This special Destination Frontier is designed to do two things: first, demonstrate Frontier’s durability, quality and reliability, even when traveling to remote destinations. And second, to help democratize the overlanding experience by showing a more affordable approach to the sport,” said Tiago Castro, director of Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc.
Nissan built the Destination Frontier on a 2019 Frontier Crew Cab SV 4×4 Midnight Edition production truck. It’s the middle of the road when it comes to the Nissan Frontier trim levels, which means it’s comfortable but stops short of luxurious. The 4×4 powertrain upgrade gives it the capability you need to take this truck on overlanding treks. From there, a 3-inch lift kit and off-road tires improve its handling on your drive.

When it comes to accessories, this truck is loaded for an extended trip into rugged nature. A CVT Mt. Shasta rooftop tent partnered with a Leitner Designs bed rack and Rhino Rack Pioneer Tray gives you somewhere safe off the ground to sleep, and the Dometic fridge will keep your provisions fresh. Pro lights from Baja Designs shine bright to light your way far from any streetlamps.
