American Honda Motor Co. has announced record February sales of 118,985 Honda and Acura vehicles, representing a 12.8% increase over Honda’s February 2014 sales. The extra sales day provided by Leap Year helped, but not as much as the popularity of the new 2016 Civic. Of the 118,985 total units sold, a record 106,212 were Honda models, and a record 27,707 of those were Civic sedans.
The Civic was the brand’s best-selling vehicle for the month, and is expected to retain that title this month, as the Civic coupe model hits dealerships in mid-March. The Accord also had a strong month, with sales of 25,785 units, up 19.3% from February 2014. The CR-V, America’s bestselling SUV and Honda’s third most popular model, was close behind with 25,250 units.
“Led by the all-new Civic, Honda cars are defying industry trends, even as our light truck models are red hot this winter,” said Honda division senior vice president and general manager Jeff Conrad. “With more versions of the Civic yet to go on sale and an all-new Ridgeline on the way, Honda is primed for an incredibly strong start to the year.”

Things were not as great for Honda’s luxury brand, Acura, which suffered a 1.7% decrease in year-over-year sales results, totaling 12,773 sales. While the MDX held its position as the brand’s best-selling model with 4,292 units sold, low inventory levels resulted in the vehicle actually being down 5.7% from last February. The ILX, however, had a strong month, with 1,500 units sold.
“As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Acura brand in March and the launch of the NSX this spring, it’s encouraging to see the same kind of excitement associated with the early days of the brand,” said Jon Ikeda, Acura division vice president and general manager. “With a strong gateway model attracting new customers to the brand in the ILX, and an updated MDX about to debut at the New York auto show, it’s not simply cliché to say that the best is yet to come.”
