The Freelander, a once-popular SUV that served as Land Rover’s entry-level model from 1997 to 2014, is set for a dramatic comeback in 2027. However, this time it will not return under the Land Rover banner. Instead, Freelander will emerge as a completely independent brand, the result of a joint venture between Land Rover and Chinese automaker Chery.
This marks a bold shift in the Freelander legacy, as it takes on a new identity, aiming to carve out a distinct place in the evolving SUV market. At the Beijing Auto Show, a concept car dubbed the Freelander Concept 97 was unveiled, offering a preview of what to expect from this new brand.

According to L’Automobile Magazine, this new Freelander brand is the product of a partnership between Land Rover and Chery. The Freelander Concept 97, which takes heavy design inspiration from Land Rover’s current Defender, showcases a rugged yet modern SUV. The SUV’s squared-off headlights, sharp lines, and broad shoulders evoke the Defender’s tough exterior, signaling a deep connection to Land Rover’s iconic design heritage.
While the design of the Freelander Concept 97 is a nod to its past, it also incorporates contemporary features. These include triangular rear windows and side steps, which pay tribute to the first-generation Freelander, as well as rear doors without a central pillar—a feature reminiscent of the Mazda RX-8. Under the guidance of Gerry McGovern, the design director for Land Rover, the Freelander brand takes on a distinct new identity while retaining its roots in rugged off-road capabilities.
