When you drive an electric vehicle, you can’t pull up to a standard gas station for a fill-up. You need to find a dedicated charging station to plug into. Charging can take a long time, but many vehicles can use a fast charge option to get more energy from a special type of station. Soon, second-generation Nissan LEAF drivers will be able to join other EVs at these quicker stations.

According to Green Car Reports, Nissan LEAF owners in Europe were frustrated when they tried to use fast chargers out in public. Considering that the LEAF had an impressive 151-mile range, it’s not surprising that they wanted to take it out for an extended trip. Drivers reported that after using fast chargers one time, the batteries would slow the fast charge rate down to 50 kilowatts, meaning it would take hours to fully charge for the next leg of the drive. To protect the batteries, they also needed time to cool down between fast-charging sessions.

It’s easy to see how something like this would be frustrated for EV drivers looking for an adventure. Nissan told dealers that the standard 2018 and 2019 LEAF EVs equipped with a 40-kWh battery will be eligible for a software update that fixes the overheating problem. However, it’s part of a technical service bulletin, or TSB, which means that owners won’t get a notification about the available update as they would for a recall.

Drivers with an eligible Nissan LEAF should contact their nearest EV-certified Nissan store for more information.
