Nissan’s electric vehicle batteries are living their second best life as power sources for off-grid camping adventures. Partnering with OPUS Campers, Nissan Energy has created the Nissan x OPUS concept vehicle, equipped with Nissan Energy ROAM. This portable, weatherproof power pack delivers remote power for 7-day maximum camping adventures.

The lithium-ion cells in the ROAM are sourced from first-generation Nissan electric vehicles, and the self-contained power pack is located in a front compartment of the camping concept vehicle. With support from a solar panel unit, the battery can power around a week of camping fun.

“Nissan’s leadership in energy services means we are not only transforming the way people drive, but also the way we live,” said Francisco Carranza, managing director, Nissan Energy. “The Nissan x OPUS concept is a real-world example of how Nissan Energy ROAM can integrate into our lifestyles — in this case the hugely popular leisure activity of camping. Our customers already have the ability to take control of their energy use at home through Nissan’s residential storage solutions. Now we can give them complete independence to experience ‘off-grid’ adventures. The new Nissan Energy ROAM can deliver clean, sustainable power to the most remote of locations, and be enjoyed by everyone.”

To recharge the Nissan Energy ROAM, drivers can remove the pack and utilize a solar panel accessory or standard 230-volt domestic socket. With this long-lasting battery, adventuring campers can change campsites, even those in distant locations, while still enjoying certain creature comforts.

“This new concept integrating Nissan Energy ROAM is answering real customer needs. Soon campers might be able to take whichever road — or unbeaten track — they choose, safe in the knowledge they will be connected to a robust and sustainable energy supply,” said Jonathan Harrison, managing director, OPUS.

Until Feb. 24, the Nissan x OPUS will be showcased at the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show at The NEC, in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Guests can locate the off-grid camping mobile at the OPUS booth.
