The Top States for Car Thefts
If you’re thinking about relocating sometime in the near future, make sure you consider a location’s car-theft rate. It turns out that certain states rank higher on the hit list than others when it comes to car thefts.
According to fleet management website ExpertMarket.com, Alaska tops the list. This state experiences 576 thefts per 100,000 people. New Mexico and Nevada ranked next on the list. The first had 564 theft per 100,000 people while the second had 427 thefts per 100,000 people. California, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, District of Columbia, Hawaii, and Missouri also placed among the top 10 states with high auto-theft rates.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, 209 vehicles are stolen in the U.S. simply because the driver left the key fob in the vehicle. This incident usually occurred when the driver parked it at a convenience store or in their driveway.
In the past three years, the top five states with these scenarios included California, Florida, Texas, Ohio, and Nevada. California had 31,185 incidents, while states with lower ratings, like Ohio and Nevada had 12,596 and 11,391, respectively. Top offending cities included Las Vegas, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas.

Forbes also highlighted the 10 top most-stolen vehicles according to the NICB. The 2017 model year of the GMC Sierra ranked 9th on the list.
