Why Thieves Are Targeting Catalytic Converters
Sometimes, thieves break into vehicles to steal pricy electronics like smartphones and laptops. Other times, they do so to steal something that you might not have thought would be desirable for them to steal. Per Quartz, more thieves are breaking into autos to nab catalytic converters. Why catalytic converters?
Catalytic converters typically contain palladium and platinum, metals which help this car part transform harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and water vapor. While both metals are popular for automakers to use when crafting converters, it turns out that palladium is their preferred choice. The reason that thieves have been extracting catalytic converters from parked cars (and U-Hauls) is the recent surge in palladium’s cost. 10 years ago, an ounce of palladium cost less than $200, according to Quartz. Today, however, it will cost you $1,353.10. Thus, the reason thieves have been ripping out this car part then selling it as scrap metal.
Some reminders on how to protect your vehicle
Here are some practical steps you can take to help prevent a thief from going after your own vehicle’s catalytic converter:
Protect your key fob
All it takes is stealing your key fob’s signal for a thief to gain access to your vehicle. Prevent these “relay attacks” by storing your key in tin foil. You can also purchase a Faraday sleeve for this purpose. Another solution is to simply use the vehicle’s actual key to manually unlock your car door, instead of using the auto-unlock function.
Keep the doors locked and windows shut
This might seem like a no-brainer but it’s an easy thing to forget, especially if you’re absent-minded and/or simply just want to get inside your house to relax after a long day at work.
Invest in an anti-theft device
Consider purchasing an extra layer of security for your vehicle. A smart car alarm system is one useful device, especially if your vehicle is older and doesn’t have a built-in security alarm. This CarLock gadget available from Amazon is one of the top-rated choices per Top Ten Reviews.
