The announcement goes beyond the launch of a single SUV. According to Mitsubishi, the Pajero will become an entire family of vehicles, with multiple models already included in the company’s future product plans.

The revival forms part of a broader strategy that will see Mitsubishi introduce 13 new vehicles by the end of March 2032. The roadmap spans several segments and includes both electrified and conventional models.

A New Pajero Built on a Ladder-Frame Platform

According to Mitsubishi, the new Pajero will debut this fall as a dedicated off-road SUV built on a ladder-frame architecture derived from the Triton pickup truck.

The company describes the vehicle as its future flagship model. While it shares its basic platform with the Triton, Mitsubishi says the SUV will receive four-wheel drive and a bespoke suspension setup at both axles.

The manufacturer also confirmed that the Pajero will not use the pickup’s interior. Instead, it will feature a dedicated cabin developed specifically for the SUV.

At this stage, Mitsubishi has released only limited technical details about the vehicle, focusing mainly on its positioning as a standalone off-roader rather than a direct pickup derivative.

The Pajero Name Will Expand Into a Broader Model Range

The return of the Pajero does not stop with a single vehicle. Mitsubishi’s newly published product roadmap shows that the nameplate will evolve into a series of models. According to Motor1, the roadmap indicates that at least two additional Pajero-based vehicles are already in development alongside the main SUV.

The publication compared the strategy to the way some manufacturers have expanded established off-road nameplates into broader lineups. Mitsubishi itself has not disclosed the identity of the additional models, nor has it provided details about their body styles or market positioning.

One uncertainty remains whether one of these future variants could carry the Pajero Sport name. Motor1 noted that the Pajero Sport was retired in 2025, though Mitsubishi has not announced any plans regarding that model.

Montero Returns as Mitsubishi Prepares 13 New Vehicles

Mitsubishi also confirmed the return of the Montero name, which has historically been used for Pajero-based vehicles in several markets. The confirmation has fueled expectations that a Montero-branded version could eventually be offered in North America. Mitsubishi has not announced sales plans for the United States or any other specific market.

The Pajero and Montero revival is part of a much larger product offensive. Mitsubishi’s roadmap outlines 13 new models scheduled for launch by the end of March 2032. The future lineup will include minivans, kei cars, SUVs and pickup trucks. The roadmap also shows that five of those vehicles will be hybrids, while another five will be fully electric.

The Pajero remains one of Mitsubishi’s most significant global products. The model was sold across more than 170 countries and regions during its lifespan and recorded sales of more than 3.25 million units over four generations.

Mitsubishi has stated that the world premiere of the Pajero and Montero will take place in the coming months, with sales expected to begin next year.
