The announcement comes as V8 engines continue to face growing pressure from electrification across the automotive industry. Mercedes-Benz has moved away from a previous strategy that relied on a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain in some AMG applications, allowing the V8 to remain a key part of the brand’s performance lineup.

The refreshed GLE 63 S Coupe and GLS 63 receive updates both inside and out. While their overall proportions remain largely unchanged, Mercedes-AMG has introduced revised styling elements, upgraded suspension systems, and an updated electrified V8 powertrain designed to deliver stronger performance and improved responsiveness.

Updated V8 Gains Mild-Hybrid Assistance

At the center of both SUVs is an updated twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine producing 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.

AMG has re-engineered the engine with a new flat-plane crankshaft intended to reduce rotating mass and help the engine rev more freely. The company has also fitted upgraded intakes and turbochargers to improve throttle response and efficiency.

Supporting the V8 is a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system featuring an updated Integrated Starter Generator (ISG 2.0). The system can contribute up to 23 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes-AMG says the setup improves low-end torque delivery and smooths low-speed driving characteristics while maintaining the driving feel of a traditional V8-powered vehicle.

Performance figures remain substantial. The GLE 63 S Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, while the larger GLS 63 completes the same sprint in 3.9 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph.

Chassis and Suspension Technologies Focus on Handling

Mercedes-AMG has paired the updated powertrain with a range of chassis technologies intended to enhance vehicle control.

Both models come standard with AMG Ride Control+ air suspension. The system now works alongside AMG Active Ride Control, an active roll stabilization technology that scans the road surface up to 1,000 times per second to counter body roll in real time.

The SUVs also feature the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, which provides fully variable torque distribution. An electronically controlled rear locking differential is also included.

These systems are designed to improve handling and stability while supporting the high-performance characteristics expected from AMG’s flagship SUVs.

Exterior Revisions and Expanded Personalization Options

Design changes are evolutionary rather than dramatic. The GLE 63 S Coupe and GLS 63 receive a new AMG-specific grille, revised LED lighting signatures, and larger front air intakes intended to feed the updated V8 engine.

At the rear, both vehicles feature quad exhaust outlets and a redesigned diffuser. The GLS 63 also receives distinctive 10-spoke wheels.

Inside, the layout remains familiar, with large digital displays and AMG-specific graphics. The latest AMG Performance steering wheel incorporates drive-mode controls, while the MB.OS software platform provides real-time performance information, including torque distribution, g-force readings, and engine data.

Mercedes-AMG has also expanded its MANUFAKTUR personalization program. Available options include a variety of paint finishes as well as interior combinations such as Yacht Blue and Tartufo Brown leather.

Mercedes-AMG has not yet announced pricing for the updated GLE 63 S Coupe and GLS 63. The company has confirmed the models’ updated specifications and equipment, but cost details remain undisclosed.
