Cadillac V-Series Blackwing Getting Forged Magnesium Wheels
This month in “Cadillac slowly gives up the goods on the 2022 V-Series Blackwing,” it’s been revealed that the upcoming performance sedans will get optional magnesium alloy wheels. The 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing become the only vehicles in the General Motors lineup to offer magnesium wheels.

Cadillac says it drew inspiration for the new wheels from its DPi-V.R race car. Magnesium wheels allow the vehicle to reduce unsprung mass while absorbing vibration and converting into heat. This allows the vehicle to handle more smoothly and results in a less harsh ride. Forged magnesium wheels are common among vehicles in Formula 1, MotoGP, and the World Endurance Championship.
Cadillac favors magnesium over carbon fiber
Car and Driver spoke with a Cadillac representative who confirmed that carbon-fiber wheels were also considered for the V-Series Blackwing sports sedans. According to the spokesperson, “magnesium wheels help reduce mass at the center, allowing for more flexibility with the spoke design and better shock/vibration absorbance. In our testing, magnesium alloy wheels produced a better ride quality due to its vibration dampening.”
In the first photo of the wheels, you can see that Cadillac has cheekily branded them with the sign for magnesium from the periodic table. Cadillac also offered several fun facts about magnesium in announcing the wheels, including the fact that the mineral is required by every cell in the human body. Fascinating!
Cadillac is slowly revealing details about its V-Series Blackwing sports sedans leading up to their launch in summer 2021. In September, Cadillac teased a carbon-fiber seat exclusive to the CT5-V Blackwing.
