Notable aspects of the diesel engine

The editors at WardsAuto drove the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 equipped with the Duramax engine when comprising the list. The engine was competing against other 3.0-liter diesel engines offered in full-size trucks. The editors appreciated that the Sierra 1500, in particular, provided a smooth driving experience with the engine and that the Duramax is a fuel-efficient option.

The engine gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined. When driving the Sierra 1500, the editors at Wards Auto found that the engine reached a maximum of 31.9 mpg and maintained a minimum of 24.7 mpg. The fuel economy far outnumbered that of the other light-duty diesel powertrains tested.

The Duramax engine is able to be fuel-efficient, thanks to its cylinder head and aluminum block structure as well as stop/start technology. The engine also reaches 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. By having higher horsepower than the other engines, it creates a fun driving experience.

“This engine is a match for every driving situation, whether puttering along in stop-and-go, humming along silently at speed, or responding instantly with a burst when you need it to pop into a hole in traffic,” Editor Bob Gritzinger noted.

While there are a few different light-duty diesel engines already on the market, according to WardsAuto, the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine takes the cake with its capability and calm demeanor.
