Vans are big, big business for Ford in Europe, and so the application and proliferation of electrification in its commercial vehicles is not unexpected. To cement itself as the outright leader on the front of fusing CV versatility with eco-friendly innovation, Ford revealed its new Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid in Amsterdam its Go Further event earlier this month.

The Ford Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid is most certainly a big ol’ people mover, capable of seating up to eight and offering a unique conference setting that allows the two rear rows to face off so that business talk doesn’t have to stop on the trip to the airport. It’s also replete with useful technologies like FordPass Connect Wi-Fi hotspot, and the Titanium trim gets upscale appointments to deliver a first-class feel.

But where the Ford Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid really delivers is in its PHEV powertrain. The Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid uses a series-hybrid driveline that powers the front wheels with an electric motor and employs the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine as a range extender. Working with a 13.6-kilowatt-hour liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery pack, the Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid is expected to deliver up to 31 miles of electric-only range and a total range of 310 miles with a full tank of gas and a full charge.

“Uniquely innovative and flexible, the new Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid can adapt to an unparalleled variety of use cases, giving owners and operators the advantage of being able to drive in ultra-low-emissions zones and still cover the same ground between battery charges as a traditionally-powered people-mover,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Europe. “Whether delivering executive shuttle services or ferrying large families, the Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid will offer comfort and refinement while also contributing to improved local air quality in busy urban environments.”

Deliveries of the Ford Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid will begin throughout Europe later this year.
