The GLS-Class has long occupied a complex role within Mercedes-Benz’s lineup, balancing the off-road expectations associated with the G-Class and the comfort standards of the S-Class. This positioning has shaped the model’s evolution, with the brand increasingly prioritizing refinement and luxury over rugged capability.

With the 2027 facelift, Mercedes continues that trajectory. While the SUV retains some off-road credentials, the focus shifts more clearly toward premium features, advanced displays, and improved passenger comfort, areas that matter most to its core audience.

New Engines Borrowed From the S-Class

The 2027 GLS introduces two updated powertrains, both shared with the latest S-Class lineup. According to Road & Track, the GLS580 is equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 featuring a flat-plane crank, producing 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque available between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. This broad torque range is particularly relevant for towing use.

The base GLS460 receives a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six delivering 375 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with an integrated starter generator, designed to smooth power delivery and improve start-stop operation. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard across the range.

Full-time four-wheel drive remains part of the package, and notably, the GLS retains a low-range gear with a 1:2.93 reduction ratio. This detail distinguishes it from typical all-wheel-drive crossovers and preserves a degree of off-road functionality.

Chassis Technology and Off-Road Capability Remain Intact

The GLS continues to offer an air suspension as standard equipment. On V-8 models, buyers can opt for the E-Active Body Control system, which allows individual control of each wheel. This system can stabilize the vehicle through corners or enable a “free-driving” mode that helps the SUV extract itself from difficult terrain like sand or snow.

This feature can even make the vehicle “hop,” a function intended to improve traction in extreme conditions. While such capabilities exist, they are likely secondary for most owners, given the model’s primary use as a luxury family vehicle.

Interior Technology and Comfort Take Center Stage

Inside, the 2027 GLS adopts a Superscreen layout, combining three 12.3-inch displays under a single glass panel. Unlike some newer Mercedes models, it retains physical controls for key functions such as climate settings and off-road modes, along with a central touchpad.

The updated MBUX system integrates multiple digital services, including artificial intelligence platforms and videoconferencing via an onboard camera positioned on the dashboard. This reflects a broader shift toward connected, multifunctional interiors.

Passenger space remains a defining feature. Mercedes claims individuals up to six feet four inches can sit comfortably in all three rows. Front seats include enhanced massage programs, while the optional Executive Rear Seat Package Plus adds second-row multicontour seats with massage, headrest pillows, wireless charging, and dedicated entertainment screens with remote controls.

Exterior updates include redesigned headlights with three-pointed star LED running lights and new grille options at the front. At the rear, tri-spike taillights are connected by a black trim element across the tailgate.

Mercedes-Benz has not yet announced pricing or an official release date. The updated GLS is expected to arrive before the end of the year, with pricing likely to increase slightly from the current starting points of $91,600 for the GLS450 and $117,660 for the GLS580.
