A Journey Around the World: How Mitsubishi model names differ by country

The importance of the milestone

Mitsubishi Motors began operating in Thailand all the way back in 1961. While it didn’t start exporting vehicles from Thailand until 1988, the company was the very first automaker to do so.

Currently, the subsidiary of Mitsubishi Motors that resides in Thailand has an engine facility and three car-production plants in Chonburi Province. As such, the location is home to the largest manufacturing center of Mitsubishi Motors outside of Japan.

In 2018, 440,000 vehicles were manufactured in Thailand, and Mitsubishi Motors exported nearly 80% of the vehicles. The vehicles even include knocked-down units. To make all this happen, Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) employees thousands of people within the supply chain, including 7,000 individuals directly.

Mitsubishi Motors plans to continue exporting vehicles from Thailand beyond the impressive milestone. The automaker will remain committed to Thailand and act as a crucial part of the ASEAN region.

Osamu Masuko, the chairman of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, said, “The ASEAN region centering on Thailand is one of the important areas for Mitsubishi Motors.” Moving forward, Masuko added, “We will continue to expand our activities in the ASEAN region to further contribute to solving social issues.”

Thailand is clearly important to Mitsubishi Motors. With its subsidiary still residing in Thailand, there’s no telling how many more vehicles Mitsubishi Motors will export from the country in the future.
