U.S. drivers probably haven’t heard of the Mitsubishi Xpander model. However, it is easily Mitsubishi’s most popular vehicle over in Indonesia.

In fact, the Xpander is so popular in Indonesia that Mitsubishi is increasing production for the model.

What’s in A Name?: Mitsubishi model names across countries

Currently, Mitsubishi produces approximately 120,000 Xpander units. If the proposed production plan is put into action, the Xpander’s production capacity will increase to 160,000 units by 2020.

The primary reason for this increase in production is due to an increasing demand for the Xpander among Indonesian drivers. In fact, Mitsubishi is struggling to keep up with the growing demand with the Xpander’s current production capacity.

“Last year, we received requests from our customers to accelerate Xpander delivery because the indent [waiting time] was a bit too long,” explained Naoya Nakamura, president director of Mitsubishi Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia.

While the Xpander’s production capacity increase has been confirmed, Mitsubishi still hasn’t stated whether it will increase production for some of the other vehicles in its Indonesian lineup. Some such vehicles include the Lancer and the Starion.

Indonesia isn’t the only market where the Mitsubishi Xpander is growing in popularity. The model is also popular in the Philippines. Mitsubishi managed to sell 13,502 Xpander vehicles in the Philippines last year, making it the local market’s best-selling multi-purpose vehicle.

With American consumers also taking a shine to larger crossovers and SUVs, there is a possibility that Mitsubishi might bring over the Xpander and release it over here. For the time being, the Xpander will simply have to celebrate its success in the Indonesian automotive market.
