This announcement was made during the World Car Awards ceremony held alongside the New York Auto Show, an event that each year highlights the most notable new models across global markets. The distinction places the BMW iX3 ahead of major competitors, including the Mercedes-Benz CLA, which had recently won the European Car of the Year title.
The World Car Awards differ from the European competition in both scope and jury composition. While the European award focuses on models primarily intended for that market, the global prize considers vehicles sold across multiple continents, with a broader evaluation panel.
BMW iX3 Takes Top Honors in a Competitive Global Field
The BMW iX3 emerged as the overall winner, selected by a jury of 98 automotive journalists representing 33 countries, according to L’Auto-Journal. The model outperformed several high-profile contenders, including the Mercedes-Benz CLA, which had been widely recognized earlier in the year.
BMW also secured an additional distinction, as the iX3 was named World Electric Vehicle. According to a statement attributed to Mike Reichelt, head of the Neue Klasse program at BMW, the model represents “the beginning of a new era” for the brand, particularly in areas such as design, range, charging capabilities, driver assistance systems, and user experience.
The vehicle is part of BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup, which introduces a new technological and design approach intended to influence future models across the brand’s portfolio.

European Winner Mercedes CLA Falls Short on the Global Stage
Earlier in the year, the Mercedes-Benz CLA had claimed the European Car of the Year title, awarded in Brussels by a jury of 60 journalists from 23 countries, according to the information provided. The model finished well ahead of competitors such as the Skoda Elroq in that regional contest.
Despite this success, the CLA did not secure the global title. The difference highlights the distinct nature of the two competitions: one centered on European market relevance, the other evaluating vehicles on a worldwide scale.
The contrast between the two results illustrates how criteria and market scope can influence outcomes, even when the same models are under consideration.

Multiple Categories Recognize Innovation Across Segments
In addition to the overall winner, several other vehicles were recognized during the World Car Awards ceremony. The Lucid Gravity received the World Luxury Car title, while the Hyundai IONIQ 6N was named World Performance Car.
The Firefly was awarded World Urban Car, and the Mazda 6e earned recognition for its design. These distinctions reflect a wide range of criteria, from performance and urban usability to aesthetics and premium positioning.
