The journey to Volkswagen’s first electric SUV has been a long one. The highly anticipated ID.4 marks the German automaker’s entry into the segment, and a big step for its ambitious EV plans. After months of speculation, delays, and analyzing the same few teaser images, the wait is finally over. On Sept. 23, the Volkswagen ID.4 was officially unveiled to the public.

The ID.4: Coming soon to American shores

A look at the Volkswagen ID.4

With the vehicle now fully revealed, its final specs and capabilities are now available. The ID.4’s initial run will feature rear-wheel drive and achieve 201 horsepower. The battery on the available “First Edition” model will allow for a 250-mile driving range on a single charge. This is only the beginning, as VW plans to release an all-wheel drive model with 302 horsepower next year.

The EV’s interior space is comparable to that found in VW’s similarly sized gas-powered SUV, the Tiguan. Drivers will enjoy a color-changing light band that runs the length of the dashboard, as well as playful details like infotainment-style pause and start icons on the brake and gas pedals respectively. The exterior will feature a light-up VW logo on certain versions.

The ID.4 will retail at a starting price of $40,000, and the special “First Edition” version will cost $44,000.

To say that Volkswagen has high hopes for the ID.4 would be an understatement. In addition to strong sales and positive reception, VW is banking on the ID.4 having a massive cultural impact, as well. The automaker has expressed its desire to see the ID.4 become the Beetle of its generation: a popular, best-selling vehicle that becomes an indelible part of the automotive landscape. Whether that happens or not, only time will tell.
