Both National Geographic and Mazda pride themselves on their knack for stunning, evocative visual design. That’s why the two companies have teamed up to present their first-ever photography competition, where the winner will be crowned as an official National Geographic photographer.

Enabling storytellers

Mazda is supporting this campaign via its Power of Potential program, designed to showcase talent, ingenuity, and inspiring artistic prowess. Participants can enter the contest via the National Geographic Your Shot Instagram account. Based on Mazda’s advertising campaign, the contest’s theme calls for photographers to submit dynamic, uplifting work that makes them “Feel Alive.”

A panel of Mazda and National Geographic judges will select three winners, who will go on to compete in additional competitions. Among these additional challenges, the finalists will set out on expeditions to capture images that evoke Mazda’s core values — ingenuity, uplifting others, and challenging norms. But the finalists won’t have to go it alone — they’ll be under the tutelage of famed National Geographic photographer David Guttenfelder and a team of Mazda Brand experts.

The chief marketing officer for Mazda North America, Dino Bernacchi, sees a lot of synergy and potential in the automaker’s partnership with National Geographic.

“Mazda has a unique approach to developing vehicles akin to a photographer’s devotion to capture a moment that tells a profoundly inspirational story,” said Bernacchi. “Our designers and engineers are more like artisans, who seek mastery of their skills. They diligently transfer their passion, energy, and knowledge into each project to create a vehicle that evokes a feeling.”

Mazda and National Geographic will provide the winners with unparalleled levels of exposure. The winning works are expected to reach over 225 million U.S. viewers through the network’s various social media platforms.

The contest will run from October 22 – November 18, and the winners will be announced in early 2020. You can catch their work on National Geographic’s various online platforms. You’ll also be able to watch the whole journey unfold in a 44-minute special feature, set to be aired on the National Geographic channel sometime in 2020.
