2016 F-150 to be Offered with CNG/Propane Capability
Ford is looking to continue the legacy of its new-gen F-150 as the smartest and most capable truck it has ever built by adding clean natural gas and propane capabilities to the 2016 model year.
All 2016 Ford F-150s equipped with the 5.0-liter V8 can be fitted with a factory-installed, gaseous-fuel prep package, enabling the F-150 to become only light-duty pickup on the market with a CNG/propane option.
“We surveyed customers likely to use natural gas or propane, and 72 percent told us they want to have these alternative-fuel capabilities available on F-150 with the 5.0-liter V8 engine,” said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager. “We expect the gaseous-fuel prep package will be even more popular than it was on the 2014 F-150 with the 3.7-liter V6 engine, given the capability of the 2016 F-150 5.0-liter V8.”
Ford has sold more than 57,000 vehicles with CNG/propane capabilities since 2009, hitting a record high of 16,821 vehicles in 2014. The prep kits have been popular choices for Super Duty trucks, but the CNG/propane-capable F-150 exceeded even Ford’s expectations when it was introduced for the 2014 model year, moving 2,000 units in under a year.
