It’s quite well-known at this point that Ford is launching a smaller off-road friendly SUV that will likely wear the Bronco name. Since this was first revealed some months ago, folks have fittingly taken to calling this diminutive Bronco the Baby Bronco, and the name has just sort of stuck.

It’s not likely (though it’s certainly possible) that Ford will market this crossover as the Baby Bronco, and a trademark filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office suggests that there may already a different, significantly better name in place: Bronco Scout.

Per Ford Authority, Ford filed with the USPTO on April 15 to trademark Scout and Bronco Scout. Both encompass “Land motor vehicles, namely, passenger automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles,” and the latter also includes a list of parts for vehicles about a mile long, including everything from brakes and struts to oil caps and valve covers.

While Bronco Scout does seem like a fitting name for the Baby Bronco — particularly given that dexterity and smaller size are common traits of scouts in Dungeons & Dragons — it may also very well indicate any number of other things up to and including a trim or variant for the Bronco or a range of in-house performance parts. It could also, ya know, come to nothing, as these things often tend to.

Still, the Ford Bronco and Baby Bronco are definitely happening, and relatively soon. The former is expected to arrive in 2020 as a 2021 model, and the Baby Bronco should hit the market just before its larger kin.
