The accident reportedly occurred in Barbados while Clarkson was on set filming his new Amazon Prime car show, but he provided no more details about the incident besides the photo. We can only assume that he escaped unharmed since he shared a picture of the crashed car via Twitter. His co-host Richard Hammond also shared a rather unconcerned message through Twitter, which said, “Two words for you: Dingle Berry.”
The British site Daily Mail speculated this car crash could have been done to promote Clarkson’s new show on Amazon, for which he’ll earn $15 million per year in salary. The new show is still without an official name, but according to rumors, it could be called Gear Knobs.
Clarkson was suspended from and then later dropped from Top Gear in 2015 for punching a producer. Clarkson recently came to a settlement with the producer and has agreed to pay him approximately $140,000. Clarkson’s former Top Gear co-hosts, Richard Hammond and James May, have agreed to follow Clarkson to the new Amazon show, so Top Gear was forced to find six replacement hosts for its new season.
Clarkson also stirred up a bit of controversy recently when he belittled UK manual transmission drivers, saying, “The only people who would buy an old-fashioned gearstick manual are the sort who choose not to have a washing machine because they prefer to clean their clothes in the local river.”
Hopefully, Clarkson really did escape unharmed from the wreck, so he can continue to provide those types of insightful analogies to the world.
