As a way to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Hyundai Motor America is providing $4 million in grants to support drive-thru testing centers at 22 hospitals across the United States.

Hyundai’s grants are being distributed through Hyundai Hope on Wheels, the automaker’s nonprofit program that funds research into cures for childhood cancer.

Reflecting the nonprofit’s mission, the grants are targeting children’s hospitals in high-need spots like Seattle, Detroit, New Orleans, New York City, and Chicago. With drive-thru testing facilities in place, these institutions can better protect young cancer patients who face higher risks from COVID-19 because of their compromised immune systems.

“As a global automaker, we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and its potential harm to the U.S. and beyond,” said Jose Munoz, the president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America. “A best practice that was crucial in South Korea’s handling of the coronavirus was drive-thru testing. This approach protects the healthcare workers and patients from the potential spread of the virus, while diagnosing those most in need.”

As part of this effort, Hyundai is also donating 65,000 COVID-19 tests developed by Seegene, a South Korean research and technology firm.

“The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has tragically impacted hundreds of thousands of lives with disease and millions more who are quarantined in the U.S.,” said Dr. Helen Cha Roberts, the president of Seegene Technologies. “By supporting testing, Hyundai has stepped up as a global leader to provide an invaluable resource that will serve impacted Americans at this most critical time while also assisting to prevent further spread of the virus.”

Along with grants for drive-thru testing at children’s hospitals, Hyundai and many of its dealerships have contributed to COVID-19 relief by donating food and money to local organizations, lending out vehicles, and producing headbands for face masks.

Hyundai has also extended relief to customers by offering deferred payment plans, payment relief for those who lose their jobs, and extensions for expiring warranties.
