On Thursday, the world waited with bated breath for the launch of the official trailer for John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum. When it hit shortly after noon, it turned out that all that anticipation was well worth it: The third entry in the action franchise starring Keanu Reeves appears to be every bit the rollicking good time we’ve come to expect from the saga of the man who is rumored to have killed three men in a bar with a pencil.

A pencil.

But one question remains unanswered: Will John Wick get his 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 back good as new? If you’ll recall, the slick, sexy Mustang driven by the slick, sexy assassin was rendered undrivable in the action-packed opening to John Wick: Chapter 2. Wick left his prized pony in the possession of chop-shop owner and automotive extraordinaire Aurelio (John Leguizamo), promising an inevitable return to its former glory. It’s like Chekhov’s Mustang, really.

And it’s almost certain to return. After all, the only thing Wick loves more than his dog is his car. Just look at this exceptional analysis from BBC Top Gear’s Craig Jamieson:

Anywhos, the modern setting and John Wick’s choice of an anachronistic car indicate a deep personal affinity for it. It’d be all too easy for him to pick something clean-lined, precise, and aesthetically minimalistic, i.e. German. It’d certainly match his house, which has more sharp edges than a Swiss Army knife. Instead, he plumped for something wilfully [sic] characterful but dynamically flawed, a leaf-springed testament to the American optimism and excess of the late 1960s. Put simply, this is a car that John Wick loves, regardless of precision, performance or anything approaching parsimonious fuel consumption. And that’s why he moves heaven and earth to get it back.

You feel that? I did.

But, alas, there is no Ford Mustang Boss 429 (or, for people complaining that it couldn’t possibly be a Boss 429, ’69 Mustang Mach 1) anywhere to be seen in the first trailer for Parabellum. There is, however, plenty of Anjelica Huston, Halle Berry, Larry Fishburne, gunplay, and hand-to-hand combat.

If you absolutely have to have some kind of horsepower in your action movie trailers, fear not: There’s approximately one, which you’ll see as Wick rides through a cityscape astride a magnificent black steed. But why are you still reading what I have to say on the matter?
