Why Do Scion Vehicles Only Come in One Trim?
If you’re a Scion owner, you probably already know that, unlike other automakers, Scion makes its vehicles in single trim levels rather than offering multiple models with varying features. But have you ever wondered why this is the case, and if it’s something other automakers might adapt in the future? As we prepare for the release of the Scion iA and iM, we found ourselves pondering this very question.
Scion is known for being a value brand, with vehicles starting at under $17,000. Despite the low price tag, however, Scion’s vehicles offer an impressive range of standard features, including rearview cameras, chrome finishes, push-button start, and leather-trimmed interiors. This allows the automaker to appeal to the millennial generation, which wants higher-end features, but doesn’t always have the funds to pay for it.
Scion’s approach allows it to simplify its inventory management. Unlike parent company Toyota, which offers a myriad of models and trims to its customers, Scion dealerships can stock just a couple of each model, ordering more when necessary, in order to keep costs down. Dealers can also install numerous accessories on-site, allowing drivers to customize their vehicles easily and cheaply.
Scion is currently testing an online selling model where customers can complete the entire car-buying process—from choosing a car and setting up a loan, to valuing their trades and even arranging to have their vehicles delivered to their doors. The model is currently in place at 60 Scion dealerships, and will be available at all US Scion dealerships by the end of 2017.
Scion’s way of doing things certainly differs from the norm when it comes to selling cars. With the new iA and iM scheduled for release soon, the automaker hopes that its one-trim approach, which it has used since its debut in 2003, will continue to draw young professionals and first-time buyers to its brand. Will other automakers follow suit? It’s doubtful, but never say never!
